What Is The Insider’s Guide To Bath Bombs?

In this Insider’s Guide to Bath Bombs you will learn their history, their ingredients, and even how to make you own. It is my hope you come away with all the knowledge you need to be a bath bomb expert!

What Is A Bath Bomb?

According to Wikipedia, bath bombs were invented in Dorset, England in 1989 by Mo Constantine.  So they have been around for over 30 years.  Apparently she was interested in what caused Alka Seltzer to fizz and applied it to creating the Aqua Sizzlers, as she called them.  I love how creative people can be!

They are usually spherical in shape, but can be formed in almost any shape.  They are called bath bombs because they fizz when immersed in water.

What Are The Ingredients In A Bath Bomb?

They are made up of a mild acid and bicarbonate base.  These ingredients react when in contact with water, and begin to fizz.  Other ingredients may include a fragrance and a dye that colors the water.

The main ingredients of the citric acid and sodium bicarbonate do not usually cause skin irritations especially since they are diluted in the water of a bath.  However, some people have sensitive skin that may react to the fragrance or the dye in the bath bomb.  Consider this fact when deciding to use a bath bomb.

Other ingredients may be some sort of emollient (a preparation that softens the skin; Oxford Dictionary).  This may give the bath water a slippery or oily quality as the emollient suspends in the water. If this is the case, be very careful when getting out of the bathtub, it may be slippery.

The dye is a water soluble dye, and should not stain your skin or the tub.  The fragrance is made from essential oils or fragrance oils, some of which can have medicinal properties.

Why Would You Use A Bath Bomb?

The benefits of a bath bomb are much like other bath products.  Those benefits are:

  • Adding aroma to your experience.  These can be relaxing smells, invigorating smells or just a fragrance you enjoy.
  • Providing skin moisturizers.
  • Cleansing the body.
  • Fun!  A fizzing colorful treat, sort of like a party in your tub!

Using a bath bomb is a treat to yourself.  It should assist you in relaxing.  It is also an add to cleansing your skin.  The mild acid can help dead dry skin to be removed.  And just enjoying a special aroma can lift your mood.  What’s not to love?

How To Use a Bath Bomb

This hardly needs to be stated, but I will anyway!  Fill your tub with water at a temperature to your liking.  Drop in the bath bomb.  You can get in when it is still fizzing, or wait until it is done.  That’s totally up to you.

Most professionals recommend a soak of only 10 – 15 minutes.  If you want to soak longer, then you should probably soak in just water with no additives.

Should You Shower After Bathing In A Bath Bomb?

Most research says you don’t have to because much of the ingredients are nourishing to your skin.  But if you have used one with coloring, or scent or glitter (?), you may want to take a quick shower to remove those ingredients.

A good rule of thumb might be to see what your tub looks like after you drain it.  What is left on your tub is what is also left on your skin.

And if redness, itchiness or scaliness occurs, then your skin probably can’t handle the ingredients and bath bombs aren’t for you!  For females, gently cleaning your private parts with clean water is recommended, as we can be prone to infections.

You Can Make Bath Bombs At Home

I’m going to include a video that shows you how to make them, as well as what ingredients you need.   Your fragrances will vary depending on your preference, as well as the oils you use.  You should be able to find all the ingredients at places like Walmart.

The best part of making your own bath bombs is you will know exactly what is in them.

Downsides Of Bath Bombs

May leave a residue, so you should probably clean the tub after you use a bath bomb.  May also make your tub slippery, so be careful and safe! Here’s my article about bathtub safety; How To Be Safe in the Bathtub.

Some people may react to the ingredients, including the fragrances.  Be aware of what is in your bath bomb so you don’t experience adverse effects.

Like bubble baths and other fragranced products, some people may become irritated and get urinary tract infections.  It is recommended that you use bath bombs sparingly, say once a week.  There is no hard and fast rule here, but be cautious of overuse.

Best Selling Bath Bombs

Your choice of bath bombs is certainly based on preferences.  These are the top results in my search.  But do your own research to find products you like.

Lush

This company was sold by the creator of the bath bomb and is not world wide.  It has medium to high priced bath bombs.  Probably has the widest selection.  Here is the link for their US website; Lush.

Natural

What Is The Insider's Guide To Bath Bombs?

The above company has natural products as do many other companies.  Be careful when shopping for natural, as some ingredients, even though natural can cause skin irritation.

This may also be true of organic products as well.

This link goes to Amazon which has many bath bomb products. This one I found is an Amazon choice, an Overall pick and has 4.5 stars.

What Is The Insider's Guide To Bath Bombs?

Dr Teal’s

I have enjoyed this line of products for some time.  They aren’t fancy but they provide much enjoyment.  They also do not have an extensive line of products.  But they are probably the most economical.

This link also brings you to Amazon where you can purchase them.  I receive a small fee from the purchase.  This product is another Overall pick and Amazon Choice!

Conclusion

Did you learn all about bath bombs?  Because that was my intention, to provide you with everything you need to know about bath bombs.  Then you can decide for yourself if a bath bomb is something you want to try.

Why You Should Take an Oatmeal Bath for Itchy Skin

In this article, I am going to cover in detail why you should take an oatmeal bath for itchy skin.  Oatmeal can soothe and moisturize itchy skin.

And while I write this, I am itching!  Why is that?  Does just the suggestion of itchy skin make you itch?  Arghhh!

Why Do Oatmeal Baths Help Itching?

The oatmeal you should use is a colloidal oatmeal.  (See below.)  The properties of the oatmeal provide a protective layer for your skin.  It adds moisture to your skin, and can ease inflammation.  Finally it can act as a cleanser.

We are interested in the anti-inflammatory part, as that is what itching is caused by; some irritant is causing us to itch.  So the oatmeal calms the skin from itching.  But it is nice that it has other benefits as well!

What Kind of Oatmeal Should I Use for an Oatmeal Bath?

Please do not take a cup of Quaker Oats and put it in your bathtub.  You need an oatmeal colloidal solution.  This is made from finely pulverized oat grains that are so small they are almost microscopic.  This is added to a liquid to make a colloid, which is by definition a substance suspended in a liquid.

High quality Colloidal Oatmeal shouldn’t have particles suspended that you can see.  It will contain the powder of the oatmeal in a liquid, so the appearance will be cloudy.  This solution will remain on your skin for you to get the full effect, so you don’t want oat flakes or granules on your skin.

Another factor to remember is that you need to drain this from your tub.  That’s why it is important to have the oatmeal in a powder.

Should You Rinse After an Oatmeal Bath?

You don’t have to rinse off the product that is coating your skin.  You want the anti-inflammatory properties of the oatmeal to stay on your skin and continue to stop the itching.  So just pat your skin dry.

You may want to add some moisturizer to your skin as well, but I would first see how your skin feels after the oatmeal soak.  The oatmeal is a moisturizer in itself, so you are already getting that added benefit.

How Long Should You Soak in an Oatmeal Bath?

First of all, you should soak in a lukewarm bath.  Very hot water can cause you to itch even more, so don’t make it too hot.  Soak for only about 10 to 15 minutes.

Be very careful getting into and out of the bathtub.  The colloidal oatmeal is slippery and you can easily slip.  I recommend having a grab bar installed to hold on to.  I reviewed some easy to install ones on my other website.  See: Best Clamp on Grab Bar for Getting Out of the Tub.

How To Make Your Own Oatmeal Baths

It is debatable about whether or not you can make your own colloidal oatmeal.  Some people say you can, as demonstrated in this following video.

Here’s a video from a doctor who explains the properties of oatmeal and why it helps the skin.  She says you shouldn’t make your own colloidal oatmeal.  But she doesn’t provide the reason why.

Product Recommendations

In the above video from Dr. Anne, she recommends the Inkey List line for skin care.  However, I don’t see any colloidal oatmeal products, so I can’t recommend this brand.

She also mentioned Aveeno, which makes an extensive line of skin care products, including a colloidal oatmeal soak.  I like Aveeno products because they are gentle to the body.  This particular product claims to be dermatologist recommended.

If you use this link to purchase it, I receive a small referral fee from your purchase.  Otherwise, shop around and see what works for you.

If you want more information about why your skin itches and other recommendations, see my other article on the topic. Best Bath Products for Itchy Skin and Other Helpful Products.

Caution

As with any product that you put on your skin, you may want to test a small part of your skin to see if you have a reaction.  Put it on your arm for a few days to see if you have a reaction.

Although oatmeal is a soothing and non-irritating product, there may be people that react to it by getting a rash.  This would include people with contact allergies.  So please test this to see if you react before you bathe in it.

Conclusion

Has this been helpful? Please leave me a comment and let me know. Also, if you have tried an oatmeal treatment, let all of us know!

5 Insane (But True) Things About Bath Products for Men

Men's Bath Products
Bath Products for Men?  Is there such a thing as Bath Products for Men?  Do Men Like Bath Products?  What Bath Products Do Men Like?   Why Would a Man Want to Take a Bath?  Are Men Who Take Baths Real Men?  Read further for answers to these questions.

Is There Such a Thing as Bath Products for Men?

Yes, there are!  Retailers like Bath and Body Works have several products for men.  Bed, Bath and Beyond also feature men’s products.  Merely doing a Google search turns up hundreds of bath products, and many of them specifically made for men.  So yes, there is such a thing as bath products for men.

I confess that as a woman, I don’t know much about men’s products, so that’s why I began this research.  Perhaps you are looking for a unique Father’s Day gift.  Maybe a bath product would be the answer.

There are bath bombs, bath salts, bath soaps.  There are of course other grooming products for men as well.  Do a little detective work to find out his favorite scents.  Then you can surprise him with a gift that is intentionally unique for his enjoyment.

Men's Bath Products
stevepb/Pixabay

Do Men Like Bath Products?

I’m going to reason from the fact that there are hundreds of bath products specifically for men, that yes, men like bath products.  I wonder which came first?   Men taking baths because there are manly bath products, or bath products were created because men take baths?

According to my research, men’s products must be distinctly male.  So the scents must be identified as manly and not feminine.  Therefore, no fruity smells, no flower smells and nothing that is pink.

The products must also be functional, especially formulated to get a body clean.  This is probably why many of the products smell fresh and natural, sort of like a walk in a forest in the early morning.  So fragrance is a large part of how popular a bath product will be with men.

What Products Do Men Like?

Interestingly, several products for men in the body wash category are 3-in-1 which means they can be used as a shampoo, conditioner and body wash.  Makes me wonder if men are so lazy they can’t be bothered with three different products!  Sorry guys!

My research states that 3-in-1 products are made for convenience and getting clean.  So if those are your goals, definitely use that.  However, you are sacrificing healthy hair, because you are not getting a quality conditioner.  And you are not getting much skin care because the cleansing chemicals used to clean your hair are not good for your skin.

See this article link Is 3-in-1 Body Wash for Men Worth It?  You’ll get a guy’s review of 3-in1 products.

From my research I found these categories of products seemed to be the most popular:

  • Bath Bombs
  • Skin Moisturizing
  • Relaxing
  • Muscle soothing
  • Cleansing
  • Bath Salts

Scents that were popular with men are:

  • Bergamont
  • Sandalwood
  • Vanilla
  • Pine

Over and over again I noted that Bath and Body Works seems to be a popular store for men’s bath products.  Some of the popular products have names that certainly sound masculine, like Slate, Ocean, and Marble.

Many products now offer essential oils as part of the product.  Most of the oils add fragrance.  Some oils, like lavender, eucalyptus and frankincense can also have medicinal properties as well.  Figure these facts into your purchase.

Here’s a video of a guy that has done some research and comparison.  He seems very invested in his recommendations.

Reasons Men Give for Taking a Bath

Men have some of the same reasons to take a bath that we women have.  Which makes sense.  Here are the following reasons that men give for taking a bath.

  • Clean up
  • Relax
  • Quiet alone time
  • Warm up
  • Heat therapy for sore muscles and other pains
  • Hope partner joins them

Men Who Take Baths Are Real Men!

For some reason, there seems to be a popular misconception that men who take baths are not manly.  I guess that comes from the idea that seeing a man in a bubble bath seems silly.

But from my research, men aren’t usually after a bubble bath as much as a nice hot soak in water that may be infused with some bath salts.  So although men enjoy a bath, they might enjoy it for reasons different from women.

A bath is a multi-use experience.  You can wash yourself to get cleaned up, but also just relax.  You may relax and enjoy your time alone.  Or you may enjoy the heat of the water to warm you up and soothe sore muscles.

Recommendations?

I am not going to make any at this point, as far as a particular product.  However, I will advise that you purchase a product that you are reasonably sure will be one with a fragrance enjoyed by the man.  That’s why I recommend you do some research.  My friend likes Old Spice Aftershave, but I’m not sure he would want to bathe in it.

Also keep in mind the purpose the man wants for taking a bath.  Salts are recommended for sore muscles, and some fragrances can be relaxing.  Just as an aside, Epsom Salts do not have the therapeutic effect they are promoted to have.  See this article:  Can Epsom Salt Relieve Pain? But Not In A Way That You Think.

On the other hand, I have researched some relaxing products, and you can see the recommendations here: What To Put In Your Bath For a Relaxing Experience.

Also, be careful if your man has allergies or skin sensitivity.  Aveeno and Tom’s of Maine have products for men with those issues.

Conclusion

By doing a bit of research and casually talking with your male friend or loved one, you should be able to ascertain some of his personal preferences.   A bath product might be the ultimate surprise as a gift and if researched properly, very appreciated.

Give Mom Something Unique for Mother’s Day | 2024 DIY Ideas

Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be expensive using the following ideas to make your Mother’s Day a unique experience.  Especially if you use some of the DIY suggestions.  Your thoughtfulness and effort will surely be remembered for years to come.

Steps To Consider

How much time can you invest?

Can you prepare ahead of time?

Would she like food?  Or a product?  Or a massage, or facial?

Ask yourself these questions to narrow the choices.  Maybe you can do all the above!  Just start planning now to make the day a success.

Maybe she wants the traditional breakfast in bed!  Or to be taken out for a meal.  Does she want to go for a hike?  Or a bike ride?  Or a drive?  It is important to find out her likes and dislikes before you plan this event.

What Does Your Mom Enjoy?

All of us are different when it comes to how we spend our relaxing time.  So it is important to take some time to think about what your Mom likes.  Some of my friends love to be out and about, seeing new places.  Others like a quiet day at home with loved ones.  And then there are people that like somewhere in between!

Here are some categories with suggestions.

Activities

I’m listing activities that she can do as a family.  After all, that’s what makes it Mother’s Day.  Make sure you have all the necessary equipment; i.e. shoes, jackets, sunscreen.

  • Walking, hiking, or running
  • Trip to the beach, mountains, or lake
  • Games
  • Concerts, movies, museums

Foods

Breakfast in bed is always a hit.  Even though there are several ideas for what to make your Mom for breakfast, always remember what she likes when you plan her meal.  You can do simple, like a bagel and cream cheese, or more complex, like an egg casserole.

Here’s a link for Mother’s Day Breakfast in Bed from Tasty.  Or do a search yourself.

Simple snacks during the day are also appreciated.  As we Moms age, we need to eat small meals throughout the day.  Healthy snacks like nuts and fruit are wonderful to keep our blood sugar steady.

Popular now is a charcuterie board.  Here’s one called The Perfect Charcuterie Board, which is under the category Tastes Better From Scratch.  Add items that your Mom may enjoy.

And of course a lunch or dinner that you prepare, serve and clean up is certainly a home run.  Your Mom will feel very loved from that experience.

All these food categories will be less expensive than a meal in a restaurant.  And you won’t have to fight the crowds.

Mom usually does the pampering.  That’s why this category can be very popular.  It is very much appreciated to have a day dedicated to Mom’s pampering.

To Be Pampered

If you are already providing a meal, why not continue the gift by adding a little pampering?  This doesn’t have to be expensive either.

When we talk about pampering, we think of a massage or a spa treatment.  But you can create a similar experience right at home.

Some suggestions are:

  • A foot massage
  • A back massage
  • A facial
  • A manicure or pedicure
  • A bubble bath

Here’s a sweet video of how this woman blessed her Mom. All these gifts were found at the grocery store!

Foot Massage

First soak her feet in warm water, with some lemon slices, honey and apple cider vinegar.  These additions will soften her skin and cleanse it.  You can then massage her feet with a nice cream that you have purchased.  Or try something simple like vaseline, or a mashed banana.  Wrap in a warm towel for a few minutes for the full effect.  Wipe clean and put on some cozy socks to protect the moisture.

Back Massage

You don’t have to be a licensed masseuse to provide a back massage.  A gentle pressure applied to the back can work wonders to relax and refresh tight muscles.  She doesn’t even have to lie down in case that is uncomfortable.  Simply sitting in a backless chair can allow you to provide a 10 minute massage.

A Facial

Most of us females have some sort of facial product on hand, so you can easily use this.  But in case you don’t you can make a cleanser from yogurt, banana, apple cider vinegar and olive oil.  Wash off.

Then apply a mask.  Again you can make one from oatmeal, honey and milk.  Let the oatmeal soak for a bit. Apply, let rest on your face for 15 minutes, wash off.

Finish with a moisturizer.  Here’s some creative ones; homemade and inexpensive.

Femina.in

A Manicure or Pedicure

You also don’t have to be a trained manicurist to provide this.  Just make sure you have the supplies on hand.  Nail scissors and an emery board are the bare necessities.  And if she likes nail polish, then have that on hand too.  She will be so proud to display your work!

A Bubble Bath

This is my personal favorite, and the reason I started this website.  If your Mom loves a nice bath at the end of the day, then here is where you can get her an inexpensive gift that will bring many happy experiences.  Ask yourself these questions first. Does your Mom:

  • Like fragrances or not?
  • Enjoy Bubble Baths?
  • Salts or Minerals?

If you can answer these questions then you should be able to find a product that she would enjoy.  It is important to choose a product that she would buy for herself, don’t you think?

What Is a Mineral Bath? What Are The Benefits?

A mineral bath may combine the following: water at a warm temperature, dissolved gasses, minerals and mud.  You can visit spas that promote such pools, or make your own mineral bath.  Read further to find out all about mineral baths.

The Study of Mineral Baths

Did you know that scientists actually study mineral baths?  Who knew?  The field of study is called Balneology or Balneotherapy, which actually means “treatment of disease by bathing”.  This field also includes the study of hot springs and spa therapy.

Granted, this line of study is more popular in Japan, which boasts of many mineral bath experiences, and most of Europe.  Let’s hope it catches on in the US!  I’ll start; LOL.

This study involves examining the effects of bathing to relieve certain diseases, pains, and skin conditions.  Illnesses that have been studied are ones that are related to chronic inflammation, namely rheumatoid arthritis.  Chronic pain has been studied as well.  And skin conditions such as eczema have been examined.

What Does Science Say About Mineral Baths?

We don’t even need to quote science to know that a warm bath can ease body aches and relax muscles.  Add to that the body feeling lighter as the water holds you up.  These results alone make for a calmer and less inflamed body.

A study from Oxford Health Department of Rheumatology found statistical proof that there are “significant beneficial effects” from spa therapy.  It should be noted that the statistical evidence is small.  And this report doesn’t state what kind of spa therapy was used.  Nevertheless, that is encouraging.

Much has been promoted about the benefits of Epsom Salt for pain relief.  However, from my research, there isn’t really scientific evidence for this.  My article Can Epsom Salt Relieve Pain? But Not In A Way That You Think discusses this further.

From the Epsom Salt article you understand that our body can’t really absorb minerals through the skin, specifically magnesium.  But some solutions can help skin conditions.  A spring high in sulfur can help with the skin condition of psoriasis.

What Is a Mineral Bath? What Are The Benefits?
Mike Goad/Pixabay

Minerals and Their Benefits

There is not enough scientific proof that any mineral soaks actually benefit your health.  The skin acts to protect the rest of your body by stopping elements from entering your bloodstream.

That said, there may be some benefit from mineral baths.  The following are the common minerals you will experience from a mineral bath.

  • Calcium – A chemical that assists in strong bones, it can also leave your skin feeling more hydrated and soft.
  • Sulfate – In natural springs this is the chemical that smells like rotten eggs.  It is one of the chemicals in Epsom Salts.  It is promoted to enhance skin health and reduce joint pain.
  • Magnesium – This is the other component of Epsom Salts.  Claims to regulate blood pressure and blood glucose.
  • Lithium – Some spas provide this gas to promote effervescence and an enhanced mood
  • Zinc – Benefits skin health and can actually treat some skin conditions

There are many other chemicals and additives for a mineral bath.  Ask your spa staff what their pools contain.  Ask them the benefits.  So many spas that I researched make several claims, but I’m just not sure the science backs them up.

I’ve also researched relaxing bath products in this post: What To Put In Your Bath For a Relaxing Experience. Check it out for more information.

Why Would You Want to Take a Mineral Bath?

Let’s agree that you want to bathe to get clean.  Also, you may want to destress, calm down and relax.  Maybe you need some quiet time alone.  Well a bath can do that for you.

But a mineral bath can add to the experience.  What a great deal!  You can treat your skin while you relax.  Or relieve some pain by adding a mineral.  Or calm the aching in your joints.

You really have nothing to lose but a few dollars by investing in some minerals to find out if a mineral bath will be helpful to your needs.  Or visiting a spa that boasts mineral pools.  And maybe get a massage?  Now we’re talking!

Are There Any Harmful Side Effects To Mineral Baths?

There are some precautions you should take when soaking in a mineral bath.  They are:

  • If you have heart issues, don’t soak too long or at too high a temperature.  May cause dizziness.
  • Some natural springs may contain microorganisms that can affect your skin.  Do your research before you soak in them.
  • Sulfur gasses may cause respiratory distress.
  • If you have allergies to fragrances or chemicals, mineral baths might not be for you.
What Is a Mineral Bath? What Are The Benefits?

Can I Make a Mineral Bath At Home?

Yes you can!  What you put in your bath will depend on your needs.  Of course the first item you need is a bathtub!  Next of course, hot water.  Don’t get it too hot, but hot enough to be enjoyable.  Recommendations range between 90° to 105°.  So basically, a little above or below body temperature.

Then you can add fragrances, minerals and salts, depending on your goal.  What sort of experience are you going for?  Choices might include:

  • Relaxation: Lavender fragrance
  • Skin Treatments:  Oatmeal
  • Body Inflammation or Pain:  Salts, to increase buoyancy and relieve weight on bones and joints
  • Milk:  Enhance skin health and bone health
  • Apple Cider Vinegar:  May help skin irritations

Most of these easy additions are not really minerals.  But depending on products you might purchase, you will find minerals added.

It is not recommended that you shower after a mineral soak so that the chemicals can continue to treat your skin.  But that is totally up to you.

Products?

Mineral soak products abound.  I think I will have to research them and compare them in another article.

I happen to love Dr. Teal’s products.  This link will take you to my Amazon affiliate link for Dr. Teal’s Pink Himalayan Mineral Soak.  If you purchase through this link, I receive a referral fee.  But they have many versions of the soak, so check them out.

Disclaimer

I have researched these subjects in depth.  I am not a medical professional, and don’t recommend you ignore advice from your physician.  If you are concerned about soaking in a mineral bath, talk to your doctor first.  Mineral baths are not an alternative to medical treatment, but they are natural and may give you some relief from your issues.

What Do You Think?

Did I answer your questions about mineral baths? If not, ask it in the comments. And if you have something interesting to add to this article, please do so, also in the comments.

Popular Bath Products That Are Affordable | A Review

In this article, I compare some popular bath products that are affordable.  I will review Avon, Aveeno, and Dr. Teal’s and provide you with the types of products, where you can buy them, and a price range.  It is my hope you can find a product that gives you some enjoyment in your bath experience.

Why You Might Buy a Bath Product

As you may know from reading my previous posts, I find taking a bath is a wonderful experience.  Not only am I cleaning my body, but I can relax, soothe my chronic pain, and make my skin healthier.

That’s where many bath products come into the picture.  Some products will clean you, others will moisturize, and others will affect your skin to be healthy.

The following products are ones that I have used and seem to be very popular.  I hope my comparisons will be helpful in your search for products that may make your bathing experience one of the best parts of your day.

The Products

I will compare Avon, Aveeno, and Dr. Teal’s products.  I know there are many more companies out there that provide great products, but I like these companies because they aren’t very expensive.  I have affiliate links in this article that take you to companies that sell the product. If you purchase through these links, I receive a referral fee.

Avon

Although you may associate this company with makeup, they have a decent bath products line.  These products include Bath Oils, Bubble Bath, Body Wash, Body Scrub, and Bath Soap.  They also carry Shower Gel and Lotions.

The prices range widely, from $2.50 for soap to $30.00 for Skin So Soft Moisture Bath Oil.  They often run specials and sales, so sometimes you can get a great deal on your favorites.

Especially with the Skin So Soft Products you get the oil which refreshes your skin.  The body scrubs come with aloe or shea butter for added moisturizing.  Some of the products highlight a relaxing ingredient.  So, you have a wide range of options here with Avon.

I have used Avon for years.  I find their products to be affordable and dependable.  Most are highly fragrances though, so if that isn’t your preference, you may want to try Aveeno.

This is an affiliate link to Avon’s website.  If you purchase through this link, I receive a small referral fee.

The great concept about Avon is that individuals can make a career of selling it.  I have read articles where women in other countries are making enough to provide for their families.  I like supporting a company that helps individuals.  They also work toward ending violence against women; see this article.

Avon is a Multilevel Marketing company, so keep that in mind if you have problems with that.

Aveeno

The overall impression I have of this product line is that it uses less chemicals than other products.  I have been using their shampoo and conditioner for some time because there are no sulfates in them.

Their product line isn’t as extensive as Avon, but they do have Body Scrubs and Body Washes.  And under their treatments section they feature their Soothing Oatmeal Bath Treatment or Soak.  Oatmeal is a wonderful natural treatment for itchy skin!

Aveeno promotes natural products, and eco-friendly harvesting and production.  Then they use less additives than other products.  So if you are concerned about Planet Earth, then this would be the product for you.

Prices are also very reasonable, ranging from $6.62 to $9.29.  I have been happy with my Aveeno purchases.  Which include a lotion that I find very moisturizing.

You can purchase Aveeno products through this link to Amazon. I will receive a small referral fee if you purchase through this link. Currently the Oatmeal Soak is almost half off!

Dr. Teal’s

I started using the Lavender Foaming Bath years ago.  I love to take bubble baths and the lavender fragrance has been shown to calm the nervous system.

This company really specializes in bathing products, in fact this is their emphasis.  They have scrubs, body soaks, body wash, foaming baths, body scrubs, and even a foot soak.  I prompte many products containing Epsom salts.

The popular claim is that Epsom salts can relieve pain.  However, I did research for another website and found this not to be the case, according to science.  See my article: Can Epsom Salt Relieve Pain? But Not In A Way That You Think.  Bottom line, Epsom salts may have some restorative benefits, but don’t count on them to relieve your pain.

However, the use of essential oils for fragrance does have some science to back up the calming claim.  One of those oils is lavender, so you can use the Lavender Foaming Bath knowing it will have a relaxing effect.

Most products are very reasonably priced, starting around $4.87 and up to $5.87.  However they feature a special soaking solution with activated charcoal for $16.46. You can purchase Dr. Teal’s products at Amazon. Again, I receive a small referral fee if you buy through this link.

Cautions

As I stated in one of my articles, be careful and safe in the tub.  Many oils and soap additives are slippery and can make the tub surface slippery.  Hold on to the sides of the tub when you get in and get out.

Bubble baths can cause genital irritation, so use sparingly.  It would be a good idea to rinse off that part of your body after a bubble bath.

Those with sensitive skin would probably be safer with Aveeno products, but test a small amount first just to be safe.

I hope this article was helpful as you search for bath products.  If you have other suggestions, please leave them below.  I would love to research other products!  Questions or any other comment are appreciated.

Introduction

For most of us, we bathe to clean our bodies.  But for some of us, we like to soak in the warm water and find it relaxing.  But what if we could up the experience and make our bath even more relaxing?

I think that is possible so I am sharing my research results with you.  I hope you will try one of these suggestions.

Essential Oils

An essential oil is obtained from the essence of plants. The oils have many uses, but for our purposes here, we are going to focus on what oils are recommended for relaxation.  Lavender oil is the most often recommended.  This is because science has actually shown that the aroma of lavender can actually reduce anxiety and therefore be very relaxing.

Here is the study from the National Institute of Health if you want to read about these studies;  Lavender and the Nervous System.

Other oils that are recommended are Rose Oil, Ylang Ylang, Bergamot, Chamomile and Frankincense.  I did a study of essential oils for pain, and found only a few had science backing them up.  Only lavender made the cut.  If you want to read about it, here is the article; Pain Relief With Essential Oils. Do They Work?

Ginger

What To Put In Your Bath For a Relaxing Experience

Much has been said about the anti-inflammatory properties of ginger and how it can help with digestion.  But Asian cultures have been using ginger in the bath for ages, as it is believed to balance out circulation.  And a secondary benefit is that it encourages sleep.

There are many bath products containing ginger that are available online.  I have an affiliate link here that provides you the option to purchase.  If you do so, I receive a referral fee.  Bath Salts with Ginger and Lemon Oil. This product has a 4.6 star rating and is an Overall Pick on Amazon.

Oatmeal

From my previous article, Best Bath Products for Itchy Skin and Other Helpful Products, you learned that an oatmeal soak or lotion is wonderful for itchy skin.  It is also helpful for relaxing as well.

Although there appears to be no chemical reaction from oatmeal that affects your mood, the fact that it will nourish your skin, calm itchiness and hydrate your skin, should lead to a relaxing effect.

And you probably have oatmeal on hand so you can make an oatmeal soak today!

Coconut Oil

My research didn’t actually show that coconut oil relaxes you.  But it has been shown to nourish your skin, thus reducing the signs of aging.  So I guess you could say that if you know your skin will look younger when after you soak in coconut oil, you will feel calmer and younger!

Be extra careful not to add too much.  This oil is especially slippery; on your skin and the bottom of the tub once it is drained.  Keep some big towels close by.

Milk

What To Put In Your Bath For a Relaxing Experience

This is another product that doesn’t have scientific support for relaxing you, but does have other benefits.  The fats in milk can nourish your skin, thereby reducing itching and dryness.  You can use almost any milk, except for skim because it doesn’t have enough fat.  You can even use dry milk.

However, if you want a natural product with relaxing fragrances added, here’s a suggestion. Moisturizing Lavender Chamomile Milk Bath. This product checks all the boxes because it comes with chamomile, lavender and shea butter. I’d be careful I didn’t fall asleep in the bathtub! It has a 4.6 star rating on Amazon. This is another affiliate link, where I earn a fee if you purchase.

Other Items To Include For a Relaxing Experience

Dim lights

Bright lights will not enhance your bathing experience.  Bright light makes you more alert.  And you want the opposite.  So hopefully you have a dimmer switch or a muted option for your bathroom.

Just be careful to not make it too dark.  Bathtub safety is my main concern, so have your area lit enough to be able to see and be safe.

Candles

Most of us women enjoy the fragrances and waving flame of a candle.  Adding this in your bathroom can provide a relaxing environment, especially if it is an aromatherapy candle.  You can have one or many.  This will also add light to the area.

Again, practice safety.  Have the candle in a safe container, and preferably away from you knocking it over.  If it is on the counter, make sure it is away from towels and paper products.  Think safety first!

Relaxing Music

Choose what you like in this category.  Our musical tastes can be so different, so find your favorite.  Use a small bluetooth device to enhance the experience.  Keep the volume low though for more relaxation.

Bath Caddy

There are so many variations available!  You can go very simply with a basket beside your bathtub.  Some suggestions for the contents would be a towel and your bathing products including what you would add to your bath.  Do you want to read?  Then your book and glasses.  (Though the following video says don’t read; it causes neck strain.)

There are also many versions of the caddy that fits over both sides of the tub, like a bridge.  There are wood ones, plastic ones, and metal ones.  Some even have a stand to hold your book up.  I plan to write a review about bath caddies in the future. In the meantime, you can search the web. There are several available.

A Few Words of Caution

Before you use any product in your bath water, check to see if you have a sensitivity or reaction to it, by putting a small amount on your skin.  Wait a bit to see if you have any reaction.

Also do not, under any circumstances, use electronics while bathing.  Water and electricity can kill you!

Some oils and soaps will make the bottom of your bathtub slippery.  Make sure they are dissolved and dispersed in the water before you step in.  Hold on to the side or to your safety bar as you slowly step in.  And be careful getting out as well.  Use your towel to dry your hands so you have a better grip while you get out.

Conclusion

I would love to hear of some other ideas you have to make your bath experience relaxing. And if you have questions, or comments, please leave them below.

7 Surprising Reasons To Take a Bath Instead of a  Shower

Are you debating with yourself about taking a bath instead of a shower?  Or a shower instead of a bath? I’m not going to tell you what to do, because there are advantages to both.  But I am going to give you several reasons why taking a bath instead of a shower can improve your health and cleanse you in the process.

You Will Be Cleaner

There is popular wisdom that you are not as clean in the tub because you are sitting in your own dirt and skin cells.  This is only true if you have had a day of working in dirt and sweating heavily.  Otherwise, normal activity where you aren’t sweating much can be cleansed away in a bath.

Yes, you will be just as clean after taking a shower.  But in a bath you can be clear and experience many more benefits.  Read further to find out what they are.

You Can Relax

Sitting in warm water has been a practice for centuries.  The ancient Romans, who developed the aqueduct, were able to make showers and bath houses.  They knew back then the benefit of soaking in water.

Think of the natural springs in many areas of the world.  I am blessed to be close enough to the desert here in Southern California and I can enjoy natural springs.

The water pressure on the body can loosen tight muscles, soothe aching joints, and calm the nervous system.  The water serves to hold the body, thus relieving the pressure of gravity.  For those of us who have chronic pain, giving our nerves a break is a welcome relief.

A bath makes you feel like you are floating, being held by the surrounding water.  This is a comforting feeling.  And the warm water has a calming effect.

You’ll Have a Healthier Heart

As long as you don’t bathe in extremely hot water, and you don’t have a heart condition, a warm bath can increase your heart rate and can have the same effect as a gentle workout.  It also increases circulation.

This means that it can help your body warm itself, especially in those cold feet.  It can also increase circulation in the legs, which may help edema.

You’ll Have Healthier Skin

Soaking in a bath can hydrate your skin.  Hydrated skin looks healthier.  We are after all made up mostly of water, so it makes sense that water is good for us.  Drinking enough water is central to good health.

The skin will actually absorb the moisture.  Then after you get out and dry off, moisturize to keep the skin hydrated.

I wrote a related article about itchy skin that can be helped by bath water. Best Bath Products for Itchy Skin and Other Helpful Products.

You Can Read

Okay, I know this might not be for everyone.  But I know you can’t read in a shower.  And if you are a bibliophile like me, then you can’t get enough of reading books.  So why not take a book with you as you soak?

Reading combines two of my favorite things.  And reading relaxes me as well.  I am benefiting from two relaxing activities.

Don’t forget your glasses, a towel to wipe your hands, and good lighting.  Be careful!  I have been known to drop my book in the water.  Disaster!

You Can Infuse the Water

You would want to infuse the water to gain some added benefits.  Again, something you can’t do with a shower.  Infusing with essential oils or herbs is easy and provides you with aromatherapy enjoyment.

You can use fresh or dry.  The dry are more potent, so adjust accordingly.  (Usually 1 teaspoon of dry equals 3 teaspoons of fresh.)  Fill a small muslin bag with the herbs and place in the water.  You can also use a tea strainer.  Some suggestions for herbs are:

  • Lavender – One of the most popular, it can help relax you and help you sleep
  • Chamomile – Also for relaxing and sleeping
  • Mint – Mostly peppermint; to refresh you
  • Lemon – Another refreshing suggestion.  In fact you can use different citrus for the same effect but experience a different scent
  • Rose water – Antibacterial, it soothes the skin

Those are suggestions! Maybe you have others?

Here’s another way to infuse your bath.

Some Nerve Conditions Will Benefit From Bathing

A hot bath calms the nervous system.  This is because the body is immersed in water.  The benefits to the nervous system are more pronounced in a bath instead of a shower.  One reason is that the body is buoyed by the water and relieves pressure on the nervous system.

Sufferers of multiple sclerosis are among those of us who benefit from this immersion.

The warm water increases blood flow and thereby calms the brain.  Anxiety is reduced.  Don’t believe me?  Here’s a study that reports this is the case.  Physical and Mental Effects of Bathing: A Randomized Intervention Study

You Can Do Some Gentle Safe Exercises in the Tub

The warm water is great for stretching as it warms up the muscles for stretching.  Of course you don’t want to stand up in the tub to exercise, but you can do a few stretches sitting down.

Mainly you are going to stretch your legs, feet and back.  Here are a few suggestions.

  • To stretch your upper back you can hug yourself and try to touch your shoulder blades.  In another stretch, you can bring your shoulder blades together and release.  Repeat.
  • Hug your knees to your chest for a good stretch in your hips.
  • Do ankle circles.  Extend your leg (which is actually a stretch) and circle at the ankle.  Reverse direction.
  • With your heel a few inches away from the wall of the tub, touch your toes to the wall.  Lean forward.  You will feel this in your lower back, your hip and your leg.

Conclusion

I hope these reasons will help you see that taking a bath is not just about getting clean, but rather provides many other benefits.  Taking a bath is truly self care and something most of us can do.

If you know of other benefits, please leave them in the comments.

Best Bath Products for Itchy Skin and Other Helpful Products

Do you have itchy skin?  Do you want to get some relief?  Of course you do!  Are there products that can help with this problem?  Yes there are! Read more to learn about the Best Bath Products for Itchy Skin and Other Helpful Products.

Why Does My Skin Itch?

First, itchy skin or parts of your skin that itch may be caused by a variety of things.

There are the situations where you get an occasional itch from sunburn, poison ivy or a bug bite.  These are certainly irritating, but not considered chronic.  Other causes could be an allergic reaction or dry skin.

Best Bath Products for Itchy Skin and Other Helpful Products
DMFhotography/Pixabay

Chronic itchy skin is classified as an itch that lasts longer than six weeks.  This situation can be very disruptive and agonzing.  These could be skin conditions like eczema or shingles.  Or they could be infectious diseases like ringworm or scabies.

It is best to see a doctor if your itchy skin persists.  You may need a diagnosis and a prescription.  Here is a great resource link from the American Academy of Dermatology which provides some good information.

But if you are only experiencing occasional itchiness, then these recommendations may help.

Easy Recommendations for Relieving Itchy Skin

The easiest and cheapest possible solutions are probably available to you right now!  They are:

  • Use a cold wet cloth or ice pack on the itchy area.  Don’t leave on too long.  The ice could damage your skin tissue.  I leave it on for a few seconds, remove, then reapply.  I have read that 10 minutes is the maximum time you should allow ice to be on your skin.
  • Moisturizer with a lotion that has moisturizing properties.  Avoid fragrances, as these can cause itching in certain individuals.  Put the lotion in the refrigerator for a bit.  The coolness will calm the itching.
  • Apply a baking soda paste.  Use one tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of water, rub on irritation, let sit for 10 minutes, wash off.
  • Calamine lotion is still highly recommended for skin irritations.  Apply as directed.

Bathing Recommendations for Relieving Itchy Skin

Although it may be tempting to soak in a hot bath, the hot water will probably increase the itching.  A warm bath is recommended in this case.  Warm is considered to be about 98 degrees.  Here are suggestions for making the bathtub a remedy for itchy skin.

  • Add baking soda!  Yes, just as it is helpful as a paste applied to the skin, it is also helpful in the tub.  Add ¼ to ½ a cup to a warm bath and soak for 10 minutes.
  • Make an oatmeal bath.  Oatmeal has many soothing properties.  You should grind about a cup in a food processor so it is very fine.  Your goal is to have it mix with the water (to form a colloid), and not drop to the bottom of the tub.  Soak in a warm bath for 10 minutes.
  • Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment is a product you can purchase.  The product contains only colloidal oatmeal!  Which you can make with your food processor and oatmeal, as I stated above.  But if you want to purchase it, here is a link.  I receive a small referral fee if you purchase the product through this link.
Best Bath Products for Itchy Skin and Other Helpful Products
  • SheaMoisture African Black Soap Soothing Bath Powder is another recommended product.  This product combines the colloidal oatmeal with shea butter, which is a wonderful moisturizing product. It also contains rice bran. Here’s the link to Amazon. I receive a small referral fee if you purchase from this link.
  • Eczema Honey Oatmeal Comfort Bubble Bath.  Don’t let the name fool you.  It is a wonderful product that is made for sensitive skin conditions, and will help you feel less itchy and moisturized at the same time.  Plus this has the benefit of bubbles, for those of us who are still children at heart.  A great review by a satisfied customer, here.  5 stars.

Other Helpful Products

  • Use Domeboro.  This is a medicated powder that you can make into a soak by adding water.  I have used it over the years, and it never fails to bring relief.  Here’s a link to the product site.  I do not have an affiliate relationship with this product, but highly recommend it.
  • Another surprising home remedy that is cheap is vinegar.  I have seen recommendations using both apple cider and white vinegar.  Not only should it quiet the itching, but it is an antibacterial, so if you have open sores, it will help heal.  It might sting though!  Just dab some on a cotton ball and pat onto the itch.
  • Have an aloe vera plant?  Cut off part of a leaf, cut it open, and scrape the gel out.  Apply to skin.  Also has healing properties.
  • After using any of these products, you may want to moisturize with a lotion.  If so, use one without fragrances and added chemicals, which can dry out skin and cause more itching.

Disclaimer

I am not a doctor.  All these ideas I have posted are ones I have either researched or tried.  If you are concerned about any product, try it on a small area of your skin before you use it more extensively.  If you don’t have any adverse reactions, then it is probably safe for you to use.  That is even true for baking soda!  Some people are sensitive to it!

Otherwise, contact your doctor!  Or a pharmacist.

And please be very safe when you bathe. I wrote an article on bathing safety. Click here to read it; How To Be Safe in the Bathtub.

Conclusion

Do you have other solutions? Or do you have questions? Please leave them below and I will do my best to get back to you with the answers.

How To Be Safe in the Bathtub

Bathtub safety should be in place before you step into the tub.  I don’t care how old you are, when the surface is wet, it is slippery.  Anyone can slip and fall, and possibly break a bone.  Let’s plan ahead and be safe before an accident occurs.

In this article, I will discuss some items that you might want to purchase so you can be safe in the bathtub.

How To Be Safe in the Bathtub
Hans/Pixabay

How Do You Make a Bathtub Safe?

Start with being mindful of what you are doing.  I admit that if I am hurrying or focused on something else, I get careless.  When you are in a slippery environment, you must be aware of what you are doing and you should do it slowly.  Especially if you are older, like me.

In fact, this article from the National Institutes of Health discusses this very topic. Read it here Incidence and Characteristics of Bath-related Accidents.

According to my research, these items can make the bath experience safer and therefore more relaxing.

Grab Bars

Grab bars provide extra stability.  Not only do they make it easier to get up from sitting, but the person can use them to step out of the tub.  This can prevent slipping and falling.

Grab bars come in various shapes and sizes.  They can also be permanent or portable.  You should consider your tub size and shape, the ability of the individual to grab and of course cost.  I have an article I wrote about clamp on grab bars.  It is a place to start.  Here it is: Best Clamp on Grab Bar for Getting Out of the Tub.

You may want to try a clamp on to see if it is helpful.  Then you could install a more permanent model if the situation warrants it.  Clamp on is certainly less expensive.

Bathtub Mat/Non-Slip Stickers

This is a fairly easy fix, and not very expensive.  If you own your home, you can of course place permanent stickers or strips on the bottom of the tub.  If you rent, then you can still be safe by using a mat that suctions to the bottom.

In either case you are looking to provide a non-slip surface that will provide stability.  I know you are thinking that you only need these when you shower.  But when getting in and out of the tub, you are standing, so it is important to have some gripping surface to prevent slipping.

Find something that is fairly comfortable to sit on.  You don’t want stickers that are so scratchy that it is uncomfortable to sit on.  I like my mat because it provides a surface where I can get traction but not be uncomfortable.

One product I saw was called Gorilla Grip.  Check them out.

How To Be Safe in the Bathtub

Non-Slip Rug

Once we step out of the tub, a rug that won’t slip is just as essential as a mat inside the tub.  You can add some adhesive to a rug you already have, if you are especially fond of that rug.  Generally the adhesive is permanent on the floor though, so that may not be the best option.

A bath rug that has a non-slip bottom would be my recommendation.  You can get them fairly cheap, and start on the road to bathroom safety.  Here’s a simple one that is washable, which I also recommend.

Gorilla Grip also makes these products.

Would a Stepping Stool Help?  Inside the Tub?

I have a fairly high sided tub.  I have already bruised my joint on it.  So I am being much more mindful of stepping in and out.  Depending on the height of your tub, you may benefit from a stepping stool.

These products come in stools that can be placed outside the tub, inside the tub and some have a bar to grab onto.  The issue with stools is they can tip over and then cause just as much harm as falling.  So make sure you have one that is very stable.

If you have to use a stool, it might be a good idea to have someone there to assist you.  Personally, I feel a stool might be a detriment rather than an asset.

Lifts

These are fairly expensive options, and should be carefully considered if this seems like a solution to your problem.

The Mangar Archimedes Bath Lift is a little over $100 and seems like a dependable option.  This unit sits in the tub, so you actually have to get in first.  Then it lowers the seat and raises when you are finished.

This is a great option for those who have trouble getting up off the floor, something that is more and more difficult as we age.

There are more expensive models that actually lift you into the tub and lower you, like the ones you see at pools and rehabilitation centers.

How To Be Safe in the Tub
BedexpStock/Pixabay

Have All Products Nearby

Reaching for soap, shampoo and other bathing products can be unsafe if they are not nearby.  Have these on the ledge in the tub.  And make sure you have your towel at hand once you get out so you don’t have to walk across the floor when you are wet.

What Is the Safest Way To Get Out of a Bathtub?

Most of us don’t own those walk-in tubs, which sound wonderful, so we have to make do with the fixed type that requires us to step in and out.

If you have good arm strength, the natural thing is to lift yourself from a sitting position, using the sides of the tub. But if you are elderly, or in some type of pain, then that might not be an option.

I now turn myself over so I am on all fours.  Then I grab the side and lift myself from a kneeling position.  Find a safe procedure that works for you.

Make sure you have a mat in the tub, and a non-skid rug on the floor.  Use a grab bar if need be to steady yourself.  Stand on the rug to completely dry yourself.  Dripping water on slippery floors is a recipe for accidents.

This video was made by the manufacturer of the product, but it is something that helps people that are unable to get in the tub by themselves.

Other Guidelines

Let’s not forget your bathroom should be well lit.  It may be nice to have a subdued candle lit room, but leave that for the bedroom please.  If you don’t have the best lighting in your bathroom, you can install wireless and battery operated lighting.  This is an inexpensive solution to having a well lit bathing area.

If you are giving a child a bath, never ever leave them alone. Once they are old enough to manage washing themselves they can have some privacy, but always keep a close ear for any problems. Teach them water safety early so they respect the dangers of unsafe behavior in water.

Make sure the temperature isn’t to hot in your tub. Test it with your hand, or more specifically on your wrist.

Conclusion

This is the first in a series of articles discussing the bathing experience and products that make the experience better.  In the future I will provide affiliate links for products I investigate, but I have no such links in this post.  You are welcome to suggest products and ask questions regarding this topic.  Please do so in the comments section.
